“Why is it that we spend years learning to hone a written poem and then present it in public with no attention to the act of reading aloud/performing? This class is a gateway to understanding the relationship between your poem on the page and your performance on the stage. We’ll learn basic mic technique — you’d be amazed how much confidence-building there is in just knowing how to adjust a mic stand! We’ll investigate performing as a means of editing, listening as a means of creating, always paying close attention to the musicality of the work. And then we will explode the text — discuss strategies for collaborations with other media, poem as video, opera, Gesamtkunstwerk — TotalWorldArt!Look for connections with Dada, Surrealism, Futurism, the Beats, Black Mountain, New York School, Hip Hop and West African jeliya; for readings from Mayakovsky, Artaud, Mystikal, Harryette Mullins, MC Paul Barman, Frank Stanford, Lord Buckley, the 4Horsemen, LKJ, Eileen Myles, Fernando Pessoa, Alice Notley, Nathaniel Mackey, Pedro Pietri, Ani DiFranco, et al.”
