—with Lorna Crozier
Metaphor reveals to the writer and the reader things they thought they didn’t know. It sends a tap root into the ancient, the primitive, the archetypal. You could say metaphor, no matter what the writer’s language, is poetry’s mother tongue. But where does metaphor come from, how do we coax it into being and onto the page, how do we know if it belongs there? Why do some metaphors raise goose bumps and others leave us feeling bland? What do metaphors and images have in common? This session will ponder these questions, shine a light on some beautiful comparisons, and get you writing a couple of poems. Please bring paper and pen and an enquiring and open mind. Also, bring a metaphor (written by another poet, ancient or contemporary) that knocks your socks off.
